Amarillo Texas, where the most interesting part of the day seemed to be watching old route 66 run right next to New Rt 40. I had hoped to drive on old 66 for much of the way, but it is largly gone.

We stopped at the Rt 66 Museum at 4:55PM Texas time, but they closed the museum at 5PM, so we just walked around the outside instead. The only regret Jerry and I had was that the saloon was also closed.

That night we stayed at the "Oasis" RV park at Amarillo, a very nice, new, all concrete pads, full bath house facilities etc. $20.00. At 3AM, a very strong wind woke us up. It lasted about 30 minutes and I really thought we would be blown over. It created a vacuum inside the camper that set off the carbon monoxide detectors. The next morning they told us these "Amarillo winds" are common at least weekly, and are usually 50 to 70 MPH.

  1. This is the first time I've heard about these winds...would have been frightening for me, especially the alarms going off. Bet you didn't get much sleep. Did you see any armadillos?
